Week of August 10-14, 2015

Thank you for helping to make our first few days of school a great success!  We are off to a wonderful start and I am looking forward to a fantastic year in first grade!  This week we are doing an author study on Kevin Henkes.  We are reading many of his books and doing activities to go along with some of the books we read.  Today we read Chrysanthemum which is about her loving her name until she started school and was teased.  We talked about how each of our names is special.  I am sending home an “Investigating My Name” paper today.  I am asking that you work with your child to complete this and return back to school by Friday.  Thank you!
In math, we are counting to 120, starting at any given number.  Work with your child on this at home.  (For example:  tell them to count to 120, but start at 64).  They also need to know how to write their numbers to 120, and if given a number be able to tell the number that comes after it or before it.  In Science, we are learning about living and non-living things.

Reminders:

• Gym this week was today and will be Thursday and Friday.  Wear tennis shoes!
• Scholastic Book Orders are due this Friday, August 14th!  Please don't forget to send in a check made out to Scholastic with your order.  OR you can go online to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs Class Activation Code:  GL4RP.  Thank you in advance for ordering.
• Thank you!!!  I have just about all the forms needed.  If you still have any forms to return, please do so as soon as possible.  Also, don’t forget a proof of residence and your $35 (materials fee, shirts, planners).  Checks made payable to “Yates Primary”.  
• Your child can have a free breakfast in the cafeteria between 7:45 and 8:10 each morning.
• Spelling tests begin the week of Aug. 17th.
