THIS WEEK:
     This week, we are studying Bats and Spiders.  We will be reading many non-fiction books to learn facts about bats and spiders.  Some of the books we will read are Bats, Where’s That Bat?, and Stellaluna.  We will be making a book about bats.  Our high-frequency words this week are live, house, home, mother, sister, brother.  We will learn many new words while studying bats including migrate, pups, colonies, echolocation, nocturnal, and hibernate.  We are also working on distinguishing long and short o, and contractions – n’t, ‘m, and ‘ll.  In Math, we continue our work on addition and subtraction.  Math facts this week is adding 3.

  • Library checkout this week is on Thursday.  Return books by Wednesday!

ALL ABOUT ME:

Eva shared her All About Me poster on Friday.  She shared pictures of her as a baby and with her family.  Her favorite colors are blue, pink, and purple.  She loves Monster High, My Little Pony, Care Bear, playing in the park, and being with her family!

This week’s All About Me student is Henry and next week is Issac.

Week of October 19-23, 2015

THIS WEEK:
This week, we are studying Fall and Pumpkins J.  We will learn more about pumpkins and also compare/contrast pumpkins with apples.  We will read fiction and non-fiction books including A Day at the Pumpkin Patch, Franklin’s Pumpkin, Perfect Pumpkins, and chapter book Pinky and Rex and the Perfect Pumpkin.  We will also be working on distinguishing long and short vowels, long i, and the digraphs wh, th, tch.  FYI – this week, we are going to be writing our spelling words (not multiple choice).  In Math, we are working on addition and subtraction.  We started math facts test on Friday – this is a timed test to see how quickly they can solve simple addition problems.  This week is adding 2.  Tests are on Friday.
 
REMINDERS:
  • Parent Conferences continue tomorrow.  Reminders are in your child’s planner!
  • Our library check out day is tomorrow!  Please return books in the morning. 
  • I hope you are making plans now to attend the Fall Festival next Friday here at Yates!  It is tons of fun!!!!  I am looking forward to it J
  • Your child decorated a bag to bring home and collect leaves in this week.  Please return these by Thursday.  We are going to be doing several activities with them!!  Thank you!
  • Don’t forget to dress 1950’s style on Wednesday in celebration of our 50th day!

ALL ABOUT ME:
Ethan shared his All About Me last week.  He showed us who he loves – his family and what he loves.  He loves basketball, soccer, the beach, the lake Tennessee Vols football, and roasting marshmallows and hot dogs.

This week’s All About Me is Eva and next week is Henry.

THIS WEEK:
This week, we are studying Christopher Columbus and Community Helpers.  We will read many books including Christopher Columbus, In 1492, Who Works Here?, Police Officers on the Go, and Officer Buckle and Gloria.  We are also working on distinguishing long and short vowels, long a, and the sounds /s/ for c, /j/ for g.  We continue our study of sentences talking about correct word order.  In Math, we are working on counting and writing numbers to 100. 

REMINDERS:
  • Reading Groups are back on this week (starting tomorrow!), so a book will come home each night.  Please read, sign and return daily.  Thank you!
  • Parent Conferences begin Thursday!  I will send a reminder of your time (if you did not sign up for one, I assigned one – please let me know if you can’t make it).  Please be sure to be on time.  I will be sharing your child’s report card with you and sharing how your child has done this nine weeks.  I look forward to talking with each of you!
  • Library Check Out Day is tomorrow.  Please return books!
  • Fundraiser packets are in your child’s folder today!  This is our big fundraiser for the year and we need your help!!  Please sell at least one item and return packet on Oct. 23rd!
