Weeks of December 12-21, 2016

No Spelling Words this week and next week!

THANK YOU!
    Thank you for a great first semester!  I love
working with your 1st graders.  I am looking forward
to seeing them perform tomorrow in the Christmas Program.  Thank you for working with each of them on their parts!  I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as this is my last newsletter of 2016!

THIS WEEK AND NEXT WEEK:
    This week, we are enjoying Christmas books and activities… including writing about what you think might be in your stocking and learning about how Christmas is celebrated in many different countries as we enjoy “Christmas Around the World” – the children will get to travel to every first grade teachers classroom to learn about a different country.
    Next week, we will have a Christmas Party on Tuesday the 20th at 2:00 in the classroom.  Thank you to our room mother, Leah Green, for planning a fun snowman themed party J  I can’t wait!  Then we will have our “Polar Express Day” on the last day, Wednesday, December 21st.  The children may wear their pajamas and bring one stuffed animal.  We will watch the movie, have hot chocolate, (if you would like to donate hot chocolate or marshmallows, let me know.  Thanks in advance!) and enjoy some “Polar Express” activities.  In Math, we will be reviewing.   

REMINDERS:
·        Our last day of school is next Wednesday, December 21st.  We dismiss early at 11:25.  The children return on Monday, January 9th.
·        We will have “Show and Tell” on Friday, January 13th.  Your child can bring one item to school to share with the class.
·        Don’t forget to allow your child to work on IXL, especially over the break.  Go to www.IXL.com/signin/yatesprimary, then their username and password is their lunch #.

·        TOMORROW:  December 13th at 2:00 p.m. – 1st Grade Performance – The ABC’s of Christmas – please have your child dress in their Christmas best!  Come enjoy this wonderful program in the Yates gym!

·        CHRISTMAS PARTY WILL BE DECEMBER 20TH AT 2:00!
·        December 21st – Polar Express PJ Day J  Dismissal at 11:25!

ALL ABOUT ME:

Ryland shared his all about me poster last week.  His favorite foods are chicken fingers and pollo loco.  He loves Star Wars and Christmas.  His favorite place to visit is Universal Studios.  Ryland is going to be a big brother in January J

Week of December 5-9, 2016

THIS WEEK:
This week, we continue our unit on Christmas and traditions.  We will enjoy many books including Snowmen at Night, The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Boy, The Gingerbread Girl, and Gingerbread Friends.  We will work on comparing and contrasting stories and characters.   
Our high-frequency words this week are: car, far, ride, around, back, away, town, took.  We will also work on ending –es.
 In Math, we are graphing and working on shapes.  

REMINDERS:
·        Fundraiser pick up is TOMORROW from 3:30-6:30 in the Yates gym.  They will not be sending anything home through backpacks as orders must be signed for at pick up.
·        Don’t forget to practice your ABC’s of Christmas part!
·        Library books are due Wednesday this week!

ALL ABOUT ME:
Reagan showed us lots of pictures including when she was a baby, her family, and places she has traveled.  She loves to dance, play soccer, go to Dollywood and play in the snow.  Her favorite food is macaroni and green beans.

THIS WEEK:
This week, we begin a unit on Christmas and traditions.  We will enjoy many books including The Gingerbread Man, Bear Stays Up for Christmas, Moostletoe, and If You Take a Mouse to the Movies.  We will work on putting events in a story in order, main ideas and details, and writing narratives.  We will also do some comparing and contrasting.
Our high-frequency words this week are: read, because, another, book, and over.  We will also work on blending and segmenting syllables and onset/rime, final ng and nk, and identifying verbs.
 In Math, we are working on telling time to the hour – digital and analog clocks.  

REMINDERS:
·        Return Christmas tree art project by this Thursday!
·        Our “Share Your Christmas” food drive field trip is this Friday!  If you have not turned in your form, please do so as soon as possible!  We saved some of the canned goods that you donated a few weeks ago to take with us on Friday.  Please wear your class shirt!   If all goes as planned, we should be singing live on NBC (Channel 3) at 11:04.  We will be at Life Care Centers – Campbell Campus.
·        Reading groups end for this semester on Thursday, then we will be testing.  Please keep reading at home!

Week of November 14-18, 2016

THIS WEEK:
This week, we continue our study of Pilgrims, Native Americans and Thanksgiving.  Some of the books we will read include The Littlest Pilgrim, Red Fox and His Canoe, and The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush.  Our target words this week are: open, close, leave, off, door, and don’t.  We will also work on long vowels and the vowel sounds of y.  In Math, we continue our work on place value and comparing numbers using >, <, and =.  Check work each night to be sure you child doesn’t need some extra help.  Math facts test Friday is adding 3.

REMINDERS:
·        Scholastic Book Orders due this Friday!  www.scholastic.com/readingclub Code: GL4RP.  Ordering online is easy!  Books will be here before Christmas!
·        On Friday, November 18th, we will have a “Sharing Snack” in our classroom in the afternoon!  Please have your child pick one of their favorite snacks and send enough for 19 children.  Thank you!
·        Box Tops are due by this Friday!  If you get any more over the break, please send them the Monday after break as I have to turn them in on Monday, November 28th.  Thank you! 
·        Christmas tree project is going home today.  Please return by December 1st.

ALL ABOUT ME:
Nash showed us pictures of him riding a 4-wheeler, in a space capsule at NASA in Houston, and with his brother watching monster trucks.  He likes to play football.  He also loves to swim, play outside, and ride his bike.


This week’s All About Me student is Olivia.  Nov. 28-Dec. 2 is Reagan.

Thank you!

Thank you for all of your food donations to help our community!!  Our class collected 143 items!!!  Way to go!!!!!  We enjoyed adding leaves to the "giving tree".  Some items were sent to Southern Heritage Bank for their food drive, others to our partner - Wesley United Methodist Church - for their food pantry to help those in need, and the rest will be taken when we go to Life Care on December 2nd to "Share Your Christmas"!

THIS WEEK:
This week we kick off a two week study of Thanksgiving!  J  Today your child made a bracelet after reading the story The First ThanksgivingPlease have them share with you the story their bracelet tells.  In the next two weeks, we will talk about what we are thankful for and learn
more about Pilgrims and Indians.  We will read many books including Thanksgiving Day, Three Young Pilgrims, The Most Thankful Thing, and The Very First Thanksgiving Day.
Our target words this week are: sleep, morning, night, bed, school, o’clock, and early.  We are working on handwriting and on long e: e, ee and syllables.  We will review long and short u and e and inflectional endings.
 In Math, we are revisiting place value. Math facts test Friday is adding 2.

REMINDERS:
·        No School tomorrow – staff development day due to elections being held at schools.
·        Next Friday, November 18th, we will have a “Sharing Snack” in our classroom in the afternoon!  Please have your child pick one of their favorite snacks and send enough for 19 children.  Thank you!
·        Library check out day this week is Wednesday.  If your child didn’t bring their book back today, please be sure they bring in Wednesday morning so they can check out a new one.

Mason shared his All About Me poster with the class.  He told us about his best friends J  His favorite holiday is Christmas.  He loves baseball and has a pet chicken at his Dad’s house.

Celebrating 50 Days!

We had a great time dressing up 1950's style, parading through the halls and dancing to 1950's music, and having root beer floats in our classroom.  Happy 50th day of school!

THIS WEEK:
We had a great time celebrating 50 days of school 1950’s style today J  This week, we are doing an author study on Laura Numeroff.  We will ready many of her books including If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, If You Give a Dog a Donut, and If You Give a Pig a Pancake.  We will also continue to study Elections.
Our target words this week are: each, own, name, year, also, fall.  We are also working on distinguishing long and short u and e, and reviewing contractions and inflectional endings.  In Math, we are adding 10 and graphing.  We start math facts test this week.  Friday’s test will be adding 1.

REMINDERS:
·        Our check out day is Wednesday this week.  Return books tomorrow please!
·        Don’t forget to send in food this week for our food drive!
·        All fundraiser packets and money must be in by Wednesday.
·        I have no one signed up for snacks this week, so if you have anything you can send, please do.  Thank you!
