Week of January 25-29, 2016

THIS WEEK:
This week we are studying dinosaurs.  We will watch a Discovery Education video on dinosaurs and a Brainpop Jr. video on fossils and ready many fiction and non-fiction books including Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Story, Dinosaur Time, The Trouble with Tyrannosaurus Rex, and How Do Dinosaurs Go To School.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  men, woman, along stop, both, and walk.  We will also work on blending and segmenting onset/rimes, r-controlled er, ir, ur, and contractions ‘s, ‘ve, and ‘re.

In Math, we will be working on adding three numbers.  In Science, we are learning about matter, magnets, and float or sink.

ALL ABOUT ME:
Miguel shared his All About Me with the class today.  He showed us many pictures of him from a baby until now.  He also showed us pictures of when he went to the beach, built a snowman, and went to Disney World.  He likes minions, Batman, and chocolate.

Sophia is our All About Me student this week.  Ya’Kinley is next week.

THIS WEEK:
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend!  We are looking forward to celebrating 100 days of school on Friday J  This week we are doing an author study on Jan Brett.  We will read several of her books including The Mitten, The Hat, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, and The Three Snow Bears.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  every, anything, think, people, could, and too.  We will also work on blending and segmenting syllables, ending –ed and -ing, and r-controlled ar.

In Math, we are working on missing numbers in addition and subtraction problems.  Math facts test on Friday is adding 9.  In Science this week, we are talking about changes in the sky, what causes day and night, and about the moon and sun.

REMINDERS:
  • Library Check-out Day is tomorrow… if you didn’t send books back today, please do so in the morning!
  • Don’t forget to send your food item for our 100 Day Celebration on Friday!   Also, if your child wants to bring 100 of something (Ex: pennies, dry noodles, marbles, etc.), please send on Friday.
  • All About Me – this week is Miguel and next week is Sophia.

Week of January 11-15, 2016

THIS WEEK:
It definitely feels like winter today! J  This week, we are studying winter in class.  We will be reading many books about winter weather, snowmen, and penguins.  We will compare stories, draw conclusions and write.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  car, far, ride, around, back, away, town, and took.  We will also work on compound words, adjectives, and review nouns.

In Math, we are working on fact families.  We will have a math fact tests Friday – adding 8.  In Social Studies and Science, we will be doing some activities with winter, but also studying Martin Luther King, Jr.

REMINDERS:
  • Report Cards are in your child’s folder today!  Please sign and return.  Thank you!
  • The children have earned a reward!!!  We have 30 marbles in our jar and they chose “Game Day” as their reward.  So… this Friday they can bring a game to school and we will play them that afternoon.
  • Reading Groups start back next Tuesday.
  • Library Check-out day is Wednesday.  Return books tomorrow please!
  • All About Me – next week is Miguel.  Please make your poster to display in our classroom! 
  • Snacks this week and next week – Jesus
  • Your children can read books on MyOn at home.  Just go to myon.com, put in Donald P. Yates Primary.  Your child’s username and password is his/her lunch number.

Week of January 6-8, 2016

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe it is 2016, and before we blink it will be summer!   I am excited to see your children and get started with the second half of the school year.  With the short week, there are no spelling words this week.  
 
THIS WEEK:
     This week, we are studying Frog and Toad books including Frog and Toad are Friends and Frog and Toad Together.  We will use stories out of these two books to write about friendship, discuss plot, work on comprehension, and then for science we will talk about frogs and toads, compare and contrast frogs and toads and chart the life cycle of a frog.  

     In Math, we will be working on telling time to the half hour.   We will also be doing some stations with New Year’s activities that focus on time and greater than, less than, equal to.  During reading group time, we will work on some reading skills such as antonyms and making words from “Happy New Year”. 

REMINDERS:
  • SHOW AND TELL day is this Friday, January 8th.  Please only bring one item to share with the class.
  • Report Cards go home next Monday.  Please sign and return.  Thank you!
  • Snacks the next two weeks: Jesus

ALL ABOUT ME:
Madalyn shared her all about me poster before Christmas Break.  She showed us pictures of when she was a baby and many other pictures including with her family and her dog Trout.  Some of her favorite things include going to the beach, playing softball, going fishing, the color purple, and chicken alfredo.
