THIS WEEK:
It definitely feels like winter today! J  This week, we are studying winter in class.  We will be reading many books about winter weather, snowmen, and penguins.  We will compare stories, draw conclusions and write.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  car, far, ride, around, back, away, town, and took.  We will also work on compound words, adjectives, and review nouns.

In Math, we are working on fact families.  We will have a math fact tests Friday – adding 8.  In Social Studies and Science, we will be doing some activities with winter, but also studying Martin Luther King, Jr.

REMINDERS:
  • Report Cards are in your child’s folder today!  Please sign and return.  Thank you!
  • The children have earned a reward!!!  We have 30 marbles in our jar and they chose “Game Day” as their reward.  So… this Friday they can bring a game to school and we will play them that afternoon.
  • Reading Groups start back next Tuesday.
  • Library Check-out day is Wednesday.  Return books tomorrow please!
  • All About Me – next week is Miguel.  Please make your poster to display in our classroom! 
  • Snacks this week and next week – Jesus
  • Your children can read books on MyOn at home.  Just go to myon.com, put in Donald P. Yates Primary.  Your child’s username and password is his/her lunch number.

Week of January 6-8, 2016

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe it is 2016, and before we blink it will be summer!   I am excited to see your children and get started with the second half of the school year.  With the short week, there are no spelling words this week.  
 
THIS WEEK:
     This week, we are studying Frog and Toad books including Frog and Toad are Friends and Frog and Toad Together.  We will use stories out of these two books to write about friendship, discuss plot, work on comprehension, and then for science we will talk about frogs and toads, compare and contrast frogs and toads and chart the life cycle of a frog.  

     In Math, we will be working on telling time to the half hour.   We will also be doing some stations with New Year’s activities that focus on time and greater than, less than, equal to.  During reading group time, we will work on some reading skills such as antonyms and making words from “Happy New Year”. 

REMINDERS:
  • SHOW AND TELL day is this Friday, January 8th.  Please only bring one item to share with the class.
  • Report Cards go home next Monday.  Please sign and return.  Thank you!

ALL ABOUT ME:
Madalyn shared her all about me poster before Christmas Break.  She showed us pictures of when she was a baby and many other pictures including with her family and her dog Trout.  Some of her favorite things include going to the beach, playing softball, going fishing, the color purple, and chicken alfredo. 

Miguel is our All About Me student January 19-22.

Week of December 7-18, 2015

THANK YOU!
    Thank you for a great first semester!  I love working with your 1st graders.  I am looking forward to seeing them perform Thursday in the Christmas Program.  Thank you for working with each of them on their parts!  I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as this is my last newsletter of 2015!

THIS WEEK AND NEXT WEEK:
    This week, we are enjoying Christmas books and activities… including writing “If I Were a Gingerbread Man…” and comparing characters in each of the gingerbread stories we read including The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, and Gingerbread Friends.  Next week, all first grade classes will take part in “Christmas Around the World” for 3 days, then we will have our “Polar Express Day” on Friday, December 18th.  The children may wear their pajamas and bring one stuffed animal.  We will watch the movie, have hot chocolate, (if you would like to donate hot chocolate or marshmallows, let me know.  Thanks in advance!) and enjoy some “Polar Express” activities.  In Math, we will be working on shapes – plane and solid.  I will also be giving assessment tests for the 2nd nine weeks report cards.

REMINDERS:
  • Our last day of school is next Friday, December 18th.  We dismiss early at 11:25.  The children return on Wednesday, January 6th.
  • We will have “Show and Tell” on Friday, January 8th.  Your child can bring one item to school to share with the class.
  • Don’t forget to allow your child to work on IXL, especially over the break.  Go to www.IXL.com/signin/yatesprimary, then their username and password is their lunch #.
  • NO breakfast is served in the cafeteria on Friday, December 18th.

Jesus shared his all about me poster last week.  He showed us pictures of when he was a baby.  He also drew a picture of his Mom, Dad, sister, and grandmother.  His favorite colors are blue and pink.  He likes macaroni and cheese, eggs, and apples.  He likes to play soccer and read.  His favorite animal is a dog.
 
This week’s All About Me student is Neidaly and next week is Madalyn.

Week of November 30-December 4, 2015

THIS WEEK:
This week, we begin a unit on Christmas and traditions.  We will enjoy many books including The Gingerbread Man, Bear Stays Up for Christmas, Moostletoe, and If You Take a Mouse to the Movies.  We will work on putting events in a story in order, main ideas and details, and writing narratives.  We will also do some comparing and contrasting.

Our high-frequency words this week are: read, because, another, book, and over.  We will also work on blending and segmenting syllables and onset/rime, final ng and nk, and identifying verbs.

In Math, we are working on telling time to the hour – digital and analog clocks.  
 

REMINDERS:
  • Return Christmas tree art project tomorrow!
  • Snacks – this week – Anna.  December 7-11 and 14-18 is Eva.  Thank you!!
  • Our “Share Your Christmas” food drive field trip is this Friday!  If you have not turned in your form, please do so as soon as possible!  (I know it has been awhile so you may not remember if you have or haven’t – I will send you a reminder if you need to send the form.)  We need more canned goods to take, so please send at least one if you haven’t yet.   Thank you!  We will wear our class shirts.  I have them here to put on before we leave.  Watch or tape Channel 3 at 9:55.
  • No more reading groups until January 19th, but please keep reading at home!
  • Don't forget!  Yates Primary is collecting NEW toys and gifts for children ages 1-18 years old until December 4th.  These toys will be given to The Refuge where parents who can’t afford Christmas for their children can come and select gifts.
  • The fundraiser orders are in!  You may pick up your orders TOMORROW between 7:45-8:30 or 3:00-6:00 in the gym.  *Online orders are delivered to homes.
ALL ABOUT ME:  Jesua shared that he likes when his Mom takes pictures of him J  He also likes the color purple.  His favorite foods are chicken and ice cream.  He likes to go to the park and swing, and he loves playing video games.

Week of November 16-20, 2015

THIS WEEK:
This week, we continue our study of Pilgrims, Native Americans and Thanksgiving.  Some of the books we will read include The Littlest Pilgrim, Red Fox and His Canoe, and The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush.  Miss Callahan, my methods student, is teaching reading this week.  Her last day with us is Thursday.  She has been with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays and has done a wonderful job.  We wish her the best!

Our target words this week are: open, close, leave, off, door, and don’t.  We will also work on long vowels and the vowel sounds of y.

In Math, we continue our work on place value and comparing numbers using >, <, and =.  Check work each night to be sure you child doesn’t need some extra help. 

REMINDERS:
  • Scholastic Book Orders due this Friday!  www.scholastic.com/readingclub Code: GL4RP.  Ordering online is easy!  Books will be here before Christmas!
  • Thanksgiving lunch in cafeteria Thursday – red choice will be turkey & gravy with dressing, blue choice will be hot ham and cheese sandwich.

THIS WEEK:
This week we kick off a two week study of Thanksgiving!  J  Today your child made a bracelet after reading the story The First Thanksgiving.  Please have them share with you the story their bracelet tells.  In the next two weeks, we will talk about what we are thankful for and learn more about Pilgrims and Indians.  We will read many books including Thanksgiving Day, Three Young Pilgrims, The Most Thankful Thing, and The Very First Thanksgiving Day.

Our target words this week are: sleep, morning, night, bed, school, o’clock, and early.  We are working on handwriting and on long e: e, ee and syllables.  We will review long and short u and e and inflectional endings.

In Math, we are revisiting place value.

REMINDERS:
  • Next Friday, November 20th, we will have a “Sharing Snack” in our classroom in the afternoon!  Please have your child pick one of their favorite snacks and send enough for 20 children.  Thank you!
  • Library check out day this week is Wednesday.  Return books on Tuesday.

THIS WEEK:
This week, we are doing an author study on Laura Numeroff.  We will ready many of her books including If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, If You Give a Dog a Donut, and If You Give a Pig a Pancake.

Our target words this week are: each, own, name, year, also, fall.  We are also working on distinguishing long and short u and e, and reviewing contractions and inflectional endings.  In Math, we are adding 10.  Our math facts test this week is adding 4.  We will take spelling test and math facts test on Friday.

REMINDERS:
  • We are collecting canned goods at Yates Primary for the holiday season.  We appreciate any donations you can make this week.  Thank you!
  • Our check out day is Thursday this week.  Return books on Wednesday please!
