THIS WEEK:

          This week we will continue to study Presidents, with the focus being on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  The children will also be sharing their research projects this week.  Our high-frequency words are: fly, fast, goes, try, though, and why.  We will also work on substituting initial phonemes, long o: oa, ow, and three-letter blends.  In Math, we will be working on finding 10 more or 10 less without having to count and adding and subtracting 10’s.  Math fact test on Friday will be subtracting 1.

REMINDERS:

·        Research Project – research of a president was due today!  We will be sharing them in class this week.  This project counts for 2 grades – research writing and speaking/listening.

·        Snacks this week and next week:  Nash

·        Library books were due today!  Checkout day is tomorrow.

THIS WEEK:

          I was happy to see everyone back today!  I hope we will all stay well!  Since last week was shortened, we will finish up Valentine’s Day books and activities tomorrow and then we will start talking about Presidents, with the focus being on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  I am really looking forward to your children sharing their research projects next week.  I am putting some papers in their folders today to help you with the project (I am so sorry!  I forgot to attach to the letter I sent home).  Our high-frequency words this week are:  please, tell, once, use, and made.  We will also work on segmenting and counting syllables, inflected endings, and long e: ea.

In Math, we are working on fact families.  Math facts test on Friday is a review of 7, 8, and 9.  We will start subtracting math facts next week.  Remember… these are timed tests – we are working on fluency in addition and subtraction with these. 

REMINDERS:

·       Research Projects on a President of your choosing are due by February 21^st.  We will be sharing them in class.  This project counts for 2 grades – research writing and speaking/listening.  Papers to help are in your child’s folder today!

·       Snacks February 21-24 and February 27-March 3: Nash.  Thank you!

          With Valentine’s Day coming up next week, our focus this week will be on Valentine’s.  We will read many books including Kiss Me, I’m Perfect, The Night Before Valentine’s Day, and Clifford’s First Valentine’s Day.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  please, tell, once, use, and made.  We will also work on segmenting and counting syllables, inflected endings, and long e: ea.

In Math, we are working on fact families.  Math facts test on Friday is a review of 7, 8, and 9.  We will start subtracting math facts next week.  Remember… these are timed tests – we are working on fluency in addition and subtraction with these.  Practice speed of solving at home!!    

REMINDERS:

Owen was our All About Me student last week.  His favorite color is red.  He likes to play with Batman toys, go to the park, and eat chicken.  His mom always puts toys on his birthday cake and he loves it J

THIS WEEK:

          This week we are studying dinosaurs.  We will watch a Discovery Education video on dinosaurs and a Brainpop Jr. video on fossils and ready many fiction and non-fiction books including Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Story, Dinosaur Time, The Trouble with Tyrannosaurus Rex, and How Do Dinosaurs Go To School.  We will also learn about groundhogs and hibernation as Groundhog Day is Thursday.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  clothes, cold, coat, kind, dress and better.  We will work on substituting initial phonemes, long a: ai, ay, and adding phonemes /s/ and /z/, and possessives.  In Math, we will be working on word problems.  Our math facts test Friday is adding 9.

·        Library checkout day is Thursday this week.  Return books on Wednesday.

ALL ABOUT ME:

Kemi shared her All About Me poster with lots of pictures including when she was a baby and with her Mom, Dad, grandparents, aunt, and uncle.  She also showed us pictures of her playing laser tag, roller skating, having fun at Superfly, swimming, and at Disney World.

This is our last All About Me week and our student this week is Owen.

ALL ABOUT ME:

Elisha shared her All About Me poster last week with several pictures of her favorites.  She showed us a picture of her family – she has 3 brothers and 1 sister.  Her favorite restaurant is CiCi’s and her favorite colors are orange and blue.  She likes breakfast for dinner, shopkins, chocolate, and she loves to be silly J  She wants to be an artist when she grows up!

This week’s All About Me student is Kemi and next week is Owen.

METHODS STUDENT:

I just wanted you to know that a student from Lee University will be coming to our class twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from now through April 13^th as part of her Methods class.  She will then student teach somewhere in the Fall.  Her name is Rosa Haynes.  She will do a lot of observing, teach some lessons, and work with the students as needed.  We welcome her!

THIS WEEK:

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend!  We are looking forward to celebrating 100 days of school on Friday J  This week we are doing an author study on Jan Brett.  We will read several of her books including The Mitten, The Hat, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, and The Three Snow Bears.  Our high-frequency words this week are:  men, woman, along, stop, both, and walk.  We will also work on blending and segmenting onset/rimes, r-controlled er, ir, ur, and contractions ‘s, ‘ve, and ‘re.

In Math, we are working on telling time to the half hour and reviewing telling time to the hour.  Your child made a clock today – this may be something you want to keep to work on telling time.  Once they understand to the hour and half hour, you can work on the second grade skills of quarter hour and nearest 5 minutes.  Math facts test on Friday - add 7.

In Science this week, we are talking about changes in the sky, what causes day and night, and about the moon and sun.

REMINDERS:

·        Library Check-out Day is tomorrow – return books tomorrow if you didn’t today.

·        Don’t forget to send your food item for our 100 Day Celebration!   Also, if your child wants to bring 100 of something, please send on Friday.

ALL ABOUT ME:

Verona was our All About Me student last week.  She showed us pictures from her visit to Wilderness at the Smokies and the beach.  She also showed us pictures of her family, her dog Buddy, a Daddy-Daughter dance, and Jumpin’ Junction.  She loves to play soccer.

This week’s All About Me student is Elisha and next week is Kemi.

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  We had a great first semester.  It’s hard to believe it is 2017, and before we blink it will be summer!   I am excited to see your children and get started with the second half of the school year.  I want to say a huge thank you to our room mom, Leah Green, for her hard work in planning and coordinating a super fun Christmas Party!  Thank you to everyone who sent in items and who came to help on the day of the party.  The children had a fantastic time!  I also want to thank all of you for my Christmas present from the class – my husband and I already enjoyed dinner and a movie over the break, my kids loved playing with some of the items in the beautiful gift box, and I am so thankful for the items to use in the classroom.  Thank you!!!  Thank you to Katie Weiss for preparing and serving the hot chocolate on Polar Express day… another super fun day for the kids J

THIS WEEK:

     This week, we are studying Frog and Toad books including Frog and Toad are Friends and Frog and Toad Together.  We will use stories out of these two books to write about friendship, discuss plot, work on comprehension, and then for science we will talk about frogs and toads, compare and contrast frogs and toads and chart the life cycle of a frog.  

     In Math, we will be working on making equal parts and dividing shapes into halves and quarters.   We will also be doing some stations with New Year’s activities that focus on time and greater than, less than, equal to.  During reading group time, we will work on some reading skills such as antonyms and making words from “Happy New Year”. 

REMINDERS:

·        SHOW AND TELL day is this Friday, January 13^th.  Please only bring one item to share with the class.

Siobhan shared her all about me poster before Christmas Break.  She showed us pictures of her family, Alaska (where she was born), and her trip to see Santa at the North Pole.  Siobhan loves dinosaurs, camping, and her new puppy.  She wants to be a vet when she grows up.
